• On social responsibility of companies and citizens.
     _
Social responsibility is an act which directly affects the society and its citizens. It goes beyond the act of philanthropy-donating money, old clothing, feeding and building houses all for the poor. It is a proactive act that counters the root causes of social ills & sins and its proliferation. In one of the fundamental spiritual and religious teachings, social responsibility is no less than the upholding of the dignity of each human person, as his image is the derivative to the Supreme Creator whose nature is all good. On the physical plane, social responsibility is an act of preserving God’s creation that sustains life on earth and transforming such creation that can in turn preserve the web of life…the life of each individual that has been upgraded to its maximum creative potentialities!

Hence, corporate social responsibility for me is an act of stewardship grounded on the philosophy that life begets life, and profits can only be called income when it has explored and utilized resources (manpower, money, machine and time) that construct life rather than destroy it thus, making the utilization sustainable. For me, social responsibility should not only be the mission of the non-stock, non-profit entities, but more so a vocation for each and every company or business organization, on the principle “to one where much has been given, much is also expected”. Companies must not only take the lead in the preservation and equitable sharing of the world's goods but must likewise be stewards of what the world has been given. It shall take the cudgels of moving its clientele and/or patrons to be responsible consumers for the rapacious exhaustion of goods and hording can lead humanity to extinction. It should lead by example and provide for the necessary policy in order that the usage of goods be made only for the full development of man’s potentialities and upholding of his dignity as direct transformer and preserver of Mother Earth's resources.

Ecological integrity and empowerment of the people and the surrounding communities must selflessly be drawn in each company's vision-mission. Caring for people is over and above its profit making venture. Rather, the government, businesses and corporations should experience economic growth because the citizens who are its consumers and laborers are meeting their daily needs as a by product of being empowered and their wants are being tamed by good values---values of a responsible consumer.

Citizens on the other hand, in furthering their social responsibility, must shake the nation and the business sectors and if necessary, create linkages to come up with heterogeneous groups --- the natives, local folks, migrants, local leaders, community workers, local and national government agencies, cause oriented or civil society groups and business sectors which shall establish and strengthen partnerships vital to nation building, environmental care and protection.

The basic tenet of each citizen must be grounded on stewardship. We should not be masters of God's creation that exploit, hoard and misuse Mother Earth's natural resources, but rather be grateful inhabitants of this Earth and be responsible citizens of the world that recognize the value of sharing to the least of his brethren and never forgets to care for Mother Earth by calling to mind our moral responsibility in our daily existence gearing towards a communal act of environmental cultivation and preservation---where no one goes hungry and is intellectually, spiritually, and physically nourished.
